Currently there is only one commissioned ship named after more than one navy man. The USS The Sullivans (DDG-68), a guided-missile destroyer is named after the five Sullivan brothers. The brothers were on the USS Juneau when it was struck by a Japanese torpedo during WWII. Four brothers went down with the ship and the fifth died in a lifeboat. Another U.S. Navy ship, The Sullivans (DD-537), a destroyer, was named after the brothers in 1943. It was decommissioned in 1974.

There is no one answer to this question. Some are named just "random", to honor a past figure in history, some to honor men/women who have contributed to any war effort, or by just having the name of another ship lost in battle. However, the Secretary of the Navy has the final say of what these ships will be called. As of 2006, the Secratary of Navy is Donald C. Winter.

When men are forced into service aboard a ship, it is called "press-ganging" or "pressing." This practice historically involved the coercion of individuals, often through threats or violence, to serve in the navy or on merchant ships. It was particularly prevalent in the 18th and early 19th centuries, especially by the British Royal Navy.
