The American Civil War ended with victory for the North. It ended at Appomattox Court House in Virginia where General Lee (Confederacy) surrendered to Grant (Union) on April 9th 1865. Most consider this the effective end of the Civil War, although battles continued in other areas of the country. (see the related question) The war did not end at Appomattox, General Lee only surrender the Army of Northern Virginia and told General Grant that was all he had control over. There were battles on April the 12th 1865 at Columbus, GA; General E. Kirby Smith, commander of the Trans-Mississippi surrendered on May 26, 1865; General Stand Waite surrendered on June 23, 1865; the CSS Shenandoah continued to sail until November 6, 1865. On May 9, 1865, President Andrew Johnson proclaimed the "the rebellion on land is ended.
Many enslaved people in the South were freed as a result of the Emancipation Proclamation, issued by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863, which declared that all enslaved individuals in Confederate-held territory were to be set free. Additionally, the end of the Civil War in 1865 and the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment, which abolished slavery in the United States, further solidified their freedom. These legal and military actions collectively contributed to the liberation of countless enslaved individuals.

The new nation that proclaimed its independence in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1861 was the Confederate States of America. The nation lasted from 1861 until 1865 and the end of the Civil War.
