Republicans opposed to Lincoln nominated John C. Fremont as their candidate. President Abraham Lincoln's supporters joined Democrats to form the National Union Party, which nominated Lincoln for re-election. The Democratic Party nominated ex-General George McClellan. After Fremont withdrew, Lincoln easily defeated McClellan to remain President.
