Bicameralism is a form of legislature where the legislators are divided into two groups. That is different form other forms of legislature such as unicameralism (one group) and tricameralism (three divisions). Different countries divide the bodies by different criteria. In South Africa, with its tricameral system, the legislative bodies are divided by the races of the people represented. In parliamentary systems, the bodies are often divided by socioeconomic groups.

In the US, the legislative bodies are divided by types of representation. There are Representatives who all represent roughly the same amount of people per Representative. So that means that the larger the population, the more Representatives a state has. However, the objection with having just the House of Representatives was that states with larger populations could be given more to the whims of the people and bully other states. So the Senate was added to be a stabilizing force, and every US state has two senators. Originally, Senators were appointed by state legislators, but the 17th Amendment made that a popularly elected office too.

Critics say that this model may make it harder to pass more meaningful changes to the laws, but proponents say it adds a layer of checks and balances.
