The two biggest political parties in the US are the Democrats (liberals, progressives) and the Republicans (conservatives). Democrats are represented by a donkey. The Republicans (also known as the GOP for grand old party) is represented by the elephant. In NO instance since World War One has either party actually shrunk the size of the US government (either in absolute or relative terms).
