A faction in political terminology is a group of people with a specific set of political goals or ideas. There are at least three major reasons that factions develop in a democratic nation. One reason is that the political party in power, legally by elections, does not conduct or support a number of issues that others within or outside the ruling party have. Also, the democratic principles of the nation allows for major disagreements to exist as long as they are peaceful and break no laws. In addition to that, it means that the ruling party has not done a good job of setting up policies that most of its people believe will work. In other words, the party in power is not satisfying the demands of a good portion of its citizens. For example, if a large segment of the population is unhappy about food shortages, they form a faction that places pressure on the government to fix that situation.
