Both Bushes, father and son, were criticized on several domestic issues.

• The major one concerned fiscal policies: Bush sr. created tax cuts but could not curb spending and finally had to renege on his promise "No new taxes". Junior created a tax cut of 1.3 trillion dollars and later added a second round of tax cuts that reduced Federal income by over 4 trillion dollars. Both Bushes however neglected to adjust Government spending to this reduced level and even let expenses skyrocket with the cost of invasion and war in two countries. The result was an enormous budget deficit
• Bush sr. was saddled with the Savings and Loans collapse, although his predecessor Reagan had been responsible for the policies causing the collapse. His support package for the savings and loans industry cost the taxpayers billions of dollars and contributed to the growth of the budget deficit
• Generally speaking, Bush's heart was not really in domestic policy and as a former career diplomat he felt much more at home dealing with international issues and foreign leaders. The few major domestic issues he did tackle estranged him from his conservative constituents who moreover felt that he did not enough on the subject of economic recovery.
