What struggles did John Adams have to face during his life?

He had to follow the legacy of George Washington who had unquestioned popularity, and had an electorate trying to choose between England and France as their European ally, not to mention the intrigues of Alexander Hamilton (who was quietly sabotaging him at every turn).

One of the main problems Adams faced was that he was expected to be as great as the Almighty Washington. Another problem he faced was that France and Britain and the United States had alliance problems, Adams had to choose between siding with France or Britain. Also he received much criticism after he passed the Alien and Sedition acts because it was deemed 'racist' to some extent.

Adams was not George Washington. He had competition when he was elected, namely Thomas Jefferson, who was his vice-president due to the way elections were run then. He had troubles with both France and England who were on the verge of war with each other and interfered with American trade. He was afraid of an American revolution and pushed through the alien and sedition acts which Jefferson opposed.
