1832 was the date of the first national nominating conventions. Both parties began on the same year.
The president is nominated by the members of a political party, either by voting in primary election or at the national convention. In the case of primaries, the voters do not actually have to be official dues-paying party members-- they merely have to declare that they support the party whose ballot they ask for.

no. In 1824, the year that Adams was elected president, the old system of having Congressmen meet and pick presidential candidates was out of favor but national parties had not yet formed. Various state legislatures nominated candidates but no party labels were attached to their endorsements. In 1828, the Adams supporters called themselves National Republicans. This party later developed into the Whig Party.
