Interestingly, there seems to be little agreement on what illnesses he had as a child: he is referred to as "sickly," which means he was frequently ill. That could have been the result of unsafe drinking water, bacterial infections, viruses, or a variety of other health issues common to that era and for which back then there were no good treatments. Later, he seems to have suffered from seizures. Despite being small for his age and very frail, he was a voracious reader and a very focused student, who worked hard with his tutors.
