Prior to the 1864 US presidential election, the Confederate Vice President, Alexander H. Stevens had been in contact with a Union POW being held at the infamous Andersonville prison. Stevens had been attempting to obtain a parole of a certain David F. Cable. Stevens believed that he and the prisoner could plan ways to aid the election of George B. McClellan. Stevens was upset in that President Davis was not swift to act and the prisoner, Cable, died before a parole could be effected.
