What did the Marines do during World War 2?

The Navy was a vital arm of fighting in WWII, especially in the Pacific theater. The Navy guarded convoys in the Atlantic, fought submarines, shelled the coastline in preperation for attacks, and served as a vital supply route along with the Merchant Marine. In the Pacific, the Navy defeated the Japanese Imperial Navy-sinking most of the Japanese carriers and battleships either with carrier-launched aircraft or submarines. More than in any other conflict, the US Marine Corp developed its famous battle toughness and fighting reputation during WWII. Mainly the Marines fought in the island hopping campaign across the south and central Pacific Ocean. Highlights of the campaign would be the spring 1942 defense of Guadalcanal, north of Australia. Later battles included Tarawa, Iwo Jima, and the summer of 1945 battle for Okinawa. Okinawa also included large numbers of Army personnel. The fighting for these and other islands, against the Japanese, was brutal and bloody. Little quarter was given or asked by either side. Most battles were fought to the death. Much close in combat was involved with grenades, knives, bayonets, and flame throwers. Both sides infiltrated the others lines and attempted to disrupt the morale and fighting ability of the other force. The marines proved to be outstanding in all these areas: storming defended beaches, hand to hand combat, infiltration and close combat. Such was the reputation gained by the Marines during this time that after the war, what had been historically the 'infantry of the Navy', was given a much larger role in America's military presence. Thus the marines have been very high profile in all subsequent conflicts such as Korea, Vietnam, Lebanon, and Iraq. Please note: The Marines pride themselves on being an all volunteer service for their entire history except for a brief few months near the end of WWII, when due to high casualty rates, not enough volunteers were available for all duties.

Through technological advancements in weapons, aircraft, vehicles, and ingenuity, the American forces defeated the axis and won the war in the pacific through the usage of atomic bombs and manpower, as well as in Europe, through aiding already succeeding allied forces from France and Great Britain.

Although the Brewster Buffalo was used in the very beginning of the war; the primary first rate US Navy fighter plane was the Wildcat. It was replaced by the Grumman's "cat family" of airplanes, the "Hellcat". By 1945, the Hellcat was going to be replaced by the Grumman's "Bearcat". Chance Vought introduced the gull winged Corsair, but the US Marine Corps preferred to fly that aircraft. The most unique Navy fighter, might be the Hellcat: it was the only US fighter plane built specifically to "KILL" Zero's. When the "Zero's" were gone (the war was over) many Hellcats were jettisoned over the side (tossed over board, to make room for returning US servicemen). The Corsair was a better bomb carrying platform and better suited for supporting ground troops, so it stayed in service a little longer. But the Hellcat had served it's purpose; so it was disposed of. The US Navy's Dauntless Dive Bomber served with distinction at Midway, which was replaced by the not so well liked "Helldiver." The US Navy's Avenger Torpedo Bomber (flown by President George Bush Sr. during WWII) was a fairly decent torpedo plane. A half dozen of these types of aircraft were lost in the "Bermuda Triangle" during the late 40's. They were also depicted in the film, "Encounters of the Third Kind."
