The American system of government allows Americans to vote for people to represent them for terms of usually two, four, or six years. Often, however, there is a significant proportion of people who are unhappy with the results of the election. As a result, there are a number of ways Americans can and do react:
* Abstaining. Sometimes, voters lose interest in the process of voting. So they simply stop voting. This is a pretty self-defeating reaction. It makes it less likely that candidates and issues you like will win in the future.
* Complaining. This is a very popular way of dealing with disappointing election results. It is not extremely effective, but Americans have the right to criticize their government. And complaining directly to the elected official might even persuade that official to agree with you on some issues.
* Campaigning. Recruiting better candidates, raising more money, and informing voters about the issues important to you will make it more likely that your candidates and important issues will win in the future.
