You are the insured. Your landlord or partner or banker may be the additional insured. They have a financial interest in or liability at stake with whatever it is you are insuring. It does not cost you more to name an additional insured. Why didn't you aks your agent this question? Can the person I was working for withold money owed to me because I did not put him under additionaly insured? Not legally unless it was contractually noted. If you did not have a loss you can just add the additional insured now. In a contractor/subcontractor relationship the contractor may request the subcontractor to name him "additional insured". In the event that a liability issue arises and is caused by the work of the subcontracor, the subcontractor's insurance will not only cover any claims made against the sub, but will also provide claims made against the contractor in regards to the sub's negligence. Many insurance companies DO charge a flat fee or a percentage based fee to name an additional insured.

What are the coverage characteristics of auto insurance?

Auto insurance usually has several components. Not all coverages are purchased by every applicant, but the basic coverages are as follows: Liability insurance provides coverage to the named insured and others who are identified by name or by relationship to the named insured in the policy for negligent acts or omissions while operating the insured vehicle. Stated otherwise, if a covered person is legally liable for causing damage to another in the operation of the insured car, the insurer will pay those damages. Because the damages are payable to a third party, liability insurance is often referred to as "third-party coverage". Liability insurance may be for bodily injury or for property damage, and the policy will specify the amount of coverage that is available for each type of damage. Some policies of commercial auto insurance have "combined single limits", which meld bodily injury and property damage coverage into a total available limit. Medical Payments / Personal Injury Protection (PIP) is a form of "first party" coverage because it pays expenses incurred by the insured. Specifically, it pays a portion of the medical expenses and lost wages insured by the insured and others specified in the policy and/or by statute without regard to fault for the collision. The payments may be subject to a deductible. Under-insured / Uninsured (UM) is designed to compensate the named insured or others designated in the policy by name or by their relation to the insured, for bodily injury, and the effects thereof, if the at-fault party did not have bodily injury liability coverage. Because it effectively takes the place of the adverse party's liability coverage, the damages recoverable by the insured or other person to whom the coverage applies may be reduced or eliminated according to the rules of comparative or contributory negligence to which the jurisdiction adheres.

Is general liability ins the same as workers compensation?

No, they are very different. General liability covers non-employee visitors to the workplace; consider it slip-and-fall insurance. Workers compensation coverage is only for workers in the course and scope of employment, even if working away from the shop. Stated otherwise, you might want to think of general liability insurance as "third-party" coverage; it provides benefits to third-parties who or which may be injured by the negligence of the insured or by those for whom the insured is legally responsible. In that sense, it is similar to other forms of liability insurance. It provides both indemnity benefits (usually, it pays on behalf of the insured those damages for which the insured is legally liable), and it provides a defense, meaning that the insurer is responsible for hiring and paying a lawyer to defend the insured. In return, the insurer gets to direct the defense (determine strategy, decide whether or not to settle, etc.). In contrast, workers compensation insurance is provided by an employer for the benefit of employees, and is typically required by law (although different states have different rules as to how many employees are required to make workers compensation coverage mandatory). For the most part, workers compensation benefits are the sole remedy of an employee who is injured within the course and scope of his/her job duties. Again, for the most part, workers compensation benefits are payable to the employee without regard to his/her fault for the occurrence. The benefits consist of a percentage of the employee's lost wages and payment of medical expenses. The employee or the worker's compensation insurer usually has the right to control the medical care that is rendered.
