The S in the military SALUTE report stands for size. The troop or forward observer who has observed an enemy force needs to report its size to his higher headquarters so that they will be aware of the presence of this force and thus get a better picture of which enemy is in their area and what they are capable of doing.

The rest of the report or things that the observer needs to observe and report on are A activity or in other words what is the enemy doing. This provides a clue to his intentions and what he is planning to do to us.

L is the location on the map where they were spotted and if possible the speed and direction that they were traveling. This will give headquarters an idea of their purpose.

U unit or do you know what type of unit that it was, Were they infantry troops, medical troops, engineers, etc.

T Time of day or night that you observed them and,

E Equipment or what type of equipment were they carrying with them? Did they have shovels, rifles, cannons, tools etc.?
