In the US presidential election of 2008, the then US Senator, Obama was elected to the Office of President, and took office in 2009. Many people considered this event a victory for civil rights in that Obama for the most part is considered an Afro American based on his parents. His mother was White and his father was Black. His heritage is correctly called "mixed" however, based on his appearance, his wife and other factors can be described as the first Afro American US President. This to many people was a victory for Black Americans. Obama, however, to his credit, has operated as the US Chief Executive without prejudice to any race or ethnic group.
