Library circulation or library lending comprises the activities around the lending of library books and other material to users of a lending library.
A library is composed of several sections, far too many and varied to be completely listed. The largest section of a library is general unspecified books, containing the large categories of fiction and nonfiction and various subcategories beneath those two. In addition, there are several other sections. The Acquisitions section keeps an up-to-date record of all books in the library, and is also responsible for purchasing new books. The Cataloging section classifies new books and categorizes them based on the library's categorizing system, and catalogs them as belonging to the library. The Circulation section is the home of all the general fiction and nonfiction books held in the library's collections. This section is also responsible for registering new members and renewing old ones, issuing borrowers' cards, and collecting late fines. Librarians work primarily in Circulation, and will help readers find the references they are looking for. Librarians in Circulation will also conduct regular inventories of books. The Multimedia or IT section houses the visual aids, microfilm, and computers of the library, as well as the copy machines, scanners, DVD or CD players, and televisions. Online resources can be accessed in the Multimedia or IT section. The Reference section of the library houses all reference materials that cannot be checked out of the library: encyclopedias, dictionaries, yearbooks, atlases, thesauruses, almanacs, and others. The Periodical section is a good place to find current news and information about current events, as it is the home of all magazines and newspapers to which the library currently subscribes; local, national, and international.
