An axe is a tool or implement used to cut or chop different materials or things. It can be used as a weapon, and has a long history of use in this manner, but its use as a tool to do things like cut down thick brush or trees also dates far back in human history. The first axes were made of stone, and that obviously pushes the use of this tool back into the stone age. Hunters doubtless used the axe to kill animals and perhaps to fight against other people.

Though the axe was used as a weapon as well as a tool, the modern axe is used for the most part as a tool. Applications include the cutting of wood, just as you'd guess, and the head is generally made of steel. Specialized axes with variations in shape are used by fire departments and rescue units as well as climbers, principally for use on ice.

Axe is also the name of a line of men's personal grooming products marketed by Unilever. Additionally, the word axe may be used as informally to refer to a guitar or other item. Use the links below to learn more about this tool and see some images of different versions. When viewing the different images, consider the uses to which each type of axe (the tool) might be put.
