What is it like as a Ship's Serviceman in the Navy?

The waves rock the ship back and forth, so there is a constant swaying motion all around you. This makes some people sea sick, but not all. If you are on deck, it smells salty, and often there is a sort of mist like spray coming up from the ocean.

I enjoyed my time aboard ship while on "cruise". The workdays while out at sea for most of us were 12 hour shifts, 7 days a week. There is a day shift and a night shift that usually runs from 0700 to 1900 and 1900 to 0700 the following day.

I was never bored while at work because even if you have a primary duty, there are numerous secondary duties assigned to you. Although the work is hard, it is also fulfilling and rewarding. I always had the the awe in me of being aboard the world's deadliest weapons platform.

There were times that we were underway for many weeks without stopping at a port, but even during those long times, there were always ways to have recreation aboard ship. Exercising, reading, cards, games were just some of the ways I relaxed and unwound during my off-time after my shift.

The food isn't the greatest, but by all means, it isn't slop. You always have enough to eat and trust me, you end up eating a lot because you burn a lot of calories daily.

The camaraderie and sense of accomplishment are what makes even the toughest times aboard the ship worth it.

You know you are helping to defend the United States and it's interests.

SH's are the Retail and Marketing personnel of the Navy, and are responsible for operating afloat retail shops, games, vending machines, barber shops, laundry/dry cleaning, etc. In addition, they also perform all financial accounting, collection, and other related activities. The civilian equivalent would be a retail store manager.

SH's are normally found on larger ships like Carriers. Smaller ships use regular crew to perform their functions. On occasion, a regular crewmember with a different rate will be sent to the SH barber school so that a competent barber is available during long deployments.
