Generally, areas used as a 'transit area" between rooms and other parts of the house is called a hallway. Rooms shouldn't be used as a 'transit area only for it is an important space. Using a room as a 'transit area' only is a death space (term used to describe spaces with no function or use).

---------------------

The term is 'dead space'! Anyway, I'd say a better term for a room that acts 'as transit' is "thoroughfare". Hallways tend be ONLY in houses and corridors in offices, thoroughfare is a more general, possibly legalistic term.
