The island of Desecheo (not Desechao) is an uninhabited wildlife refuge. The only way to the island is via private or hired boat from Rincón or other northwestern Puerto Rican port. However, visitors are prohibited by the U.S. Department of the Interior. The official reason for prohibiting visitors to the island is that there are unexploded ordinance on the island from the times it was used as a military bombing range. Diving is allowed and quite popular around the island due to the crystal-clear waters.

The bombing started when US troops found some fisherman transporting amunitions to an island nearby, which protected North Vietnam. The Suicide Squad, as the fisherman were called, continued their job, even when the cities moved underground. 17 babies were born, and no lives were lost.
