He wanted to become president because he saw how bad his father did and wasnt so good at politics and things like that and Nixon saw how that effected the family when he was growing up and decided to learn about politics and be good at paying the house and stuff. Nixon did that and saw how much he liked politics and decided to run for presedent.

Nixon was legally elected. He won 61% of the popular vote in 1968.

The incumbent president, Lyndon Johnson had become so unpopular due to

the escalation of the war in Vietnam that he was challenged for the nomination

within his own party. He decided not to run again. Robert Kennedy seemed to

very likely to get the nomination when he was killed . The eventual nominee, McGovern, was probably too liberal for mainstream America. There was also a problem with his running mate, Thomas Eagleton. It came out after the campaign began, that he had a history of mental problems, so he was replaced on the ticket even though McGovern supported him "1000%" .

Nixon was chosen by Eisenhower to be his running mate and they were elected twice. Moreover, Eisenhower gave him special assignments and rather groomed him to be his successor.
