Who is Terry Wise Yarmouth Castle hero?
He was third purser on board the Yarmouth Castle, a Canadian citizen who had only been on board the ship for three days, and was the last person to leave the burning ship, after throwing to safety, and dragging over thirty five passengers from the blazing inferno and getting them over the rail into the sea. They were all picked up and rescued due to his heroic efforts by the lifeboats from the rescue vessel Bahama Star, under the command of their brilliant captain, Carl Brown. Terry Wise was later awarded the coast guards most prestigious and highest award for a non citizen for his valour in saving life from the doomed ship. His daughter was instrumental in his being recognized, and he was awarded the distinguished public service award with medal and certificate . Later, on board the Intrepid, aircaraft carrier, in Manhattan, he was present when Carrie Boone Nelson presented the commandant of the United States Coast Guard with a bronze plaque and bas relief portrait of Terry Sinclair Wise. Terry was present for this award, and it is part of the U.S. Coast Guard art collection. He later went on to a career as chief purser and hotel manager on various cruise ships around the world. He is presently retired and living in Victoria, British Columbia.
