Divided government is suggested by some to be an undesirable product of the separation of powers in the United States' political system. The best test of the impact of divided government on legislative gridlock is to examine seriously considered, potentially important legislation that failed to pass under conditions of divided and unified government.
The likely onset of divided government with Democrats in control of the White House and probably the Senate but Republicans in control of the House has occasioned a lot of contrarian thinking. Even dough both parties control the government, they are citizens responsible for the outcome and serve under one president.
Actually many future Presidents were commanded by Presidents. Example: JF Kennedy served in the Navy under Roosevelt and Trueman (Who served in the Army under Wilson). LB Johnson served in the Navy under FDR, George HW Bush served in the Navy under FDR & Trueman. Many of the Presidents served in the military and took orders from the Presidents in office.

Both men in your question were presidents, so no president served "under them". Please rewrite your question to state what you want to know.

A Vice President can resign, be removed or die in office thus necessitating the appointment of a new Vice President. Also a President can chose a new running mate when going for re-election. Those situations have happened in the past and are why the count of Presidents and Vice Presidents are inconsistent. Seven Vice Presidents died while in office. George Clinton, under James Madison Elbridge Gerry, served under James Madison William Rufus De Vane King, served under Franklin Pierce Henry Wilson, served under U.S. Grant Thomas Hendricks, served under Grover Cleveland Garret Hobart, served under William McKinley James Sherman, served under William Howard Taft
