Being a politician is a pretty low-skill job these days; the job requirements are minimal. You have to be able to convince people that they should trust you, and give you money and power. These are often the same skills that a lawyer would have, although lawyers in general need to know some things, and this isn't required to be a politician.

Many United States senators over the past 50 years have been corrupt, venal, angry people with chips on their shoulders. It helps to have a vastly overstated sense of their own self-importance and the colossal arrogance to believe that he can run your life better than you can.
