Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming have never had a president as a native son. South Carolina claims Andrew Jackson but his exact birthplace is uncertain and may have actually been in North Carolina.

Florida is by far the most populous state to lack a president, and Connecticut, Delaware and Rhode Island the oldest.

However, Zachary Taylor began his political career in Louisiana, where he previously owned property so that state is listed as his "state of primary affiliation".

If we extend the qualification to Presidential nominees who won a plurality of the vote in any county, we can exclude:

  1. Alabama (George Wallace in 1968 won five states and 578 counties, all in antebellum slave states; he is the last third-party candidate to win any state)
  2. Arizona (Barry Goldwater in 1964 and John McCain in 2008 won six and 22 states respectively)
  3. Maine (James Blaine in 1884 - though not born in Maine - began his political career there and won eighteen states)
  4. Maryland (John Wirt in 1832 won Vermont and a number of other counties)
  5. Minnesota (Hubert Humphrey in 1968 won thirteen states and 693 counties; Walter Mondale in 1984 won his home state and 332 counties)
  6. South Dakota (George McGovern in 1972 one Massachusetts and 133 counties)
  7. West Virginia (John Davis in 1924 won 1,279 counties, all former Confederate states, and Oklahoma)
  8. Wisconsin (Robert LaFollette senior in 1924 won 235 counties and his home state. He is the last third-party candidate to win any non-southern county apart from eleven won by Ross Perot in 1992)

This leaves Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, Washington and Wyoming as having no person with either birth or primary affiliation in the state winning any county's popular vote.

Of these, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Utah and Washington have never been the birth or primary affiliation state of any Vice-Presidential candidate who won the popular vote of any county.
