Robert Todd Lincoln was Abraham Lincoln's eldest son, and the only son of 4, to live past the age of 18. He served on the staff of General Grant during the Civil War. He was a successful Lawyer, and later he served as Secretary of War for President Garfield and US Ambassador to England for President Harrison.

After leaving politics, he served as acting president of the Pullman Company, after George Pullman's death. He became the permanent president in 1901. He served in this capacity until 1911 when he resigned as president and was named chairman of the board. He continued in that position until January 14, 1922.

Interestingly, he was closely present for the assassination of three US Presidents; Lincoln, Garfield and McKinley.
