Coolidge grew up in relatively rural Vermont where his father was locally prominent as a storekeeper and farmer. Young Calvin did his part with the farm work, plowing, planting, chopping wood and picking fruit. He helped to collect sap fo make maple syrup. His father was a state legislator and would take him to the state capitol to watch the proceeding of the legislature. He had a sister who was three years younger than he was. He was not into team sports but did enjoy riding by himself on his horse. When he was 14, he went away to school at Ludlow some 12 miles from home. When he was 18 his sister died and his father re-married. At 19, he left home for college at Amherst, Mass, graduated there, read law from a lawyer in Northampton, Mass, passed the bar and settled in Northampton.
