US President Lincoln's funeral train left Washington DC on April 25, 1865 after thousands of mourners passed by the US Capitol building where he lay in state. The first 25,000 mourner were wounded soldiers from local hospitals. The train carried Lincoln and his deceased son Willie whose body was exhumed, having died of fever in 1862. Lincoln had so mourned the passing of his son that he had Willie exhumed twice before . The train also carried his wife Mary Todd Lincoln and and sons Tad and Robert.The first stop was Baltimore where 10,000 people passed by his open coffin for three hours.

The train then proceeded to Harrisburg, PA. where 40,000 people paid their respects. Philadelphia was next where 300,000 people were there to pay their respects. In New York City an estimated 500,000 mourners had come to see the funeral train.

The train then took a long route through Albany, Buffalo, Cleveland, Columbus, Ohio, Indianapolis,

Chicago, Joliet, and finally to his home city of Springfield, Illinois.
