He worked for the office of strategic services for a few months in 1939 and then served as a naval officer until 1946. He was elected Congressman in 1946, US Senator in 1950, and Vice President in 1952. Nixon ran unsuccessfully for the Presidency in 1960 and then tried, again unsuccessfully, to be elected Governor of California in 1962. He then joined a law firm in New York until winning the presidency in 1968.
