On the evening of Lincoln's assassination, Grant was wanting to visit his son at college, and this is why he asked permission not to attend the theatre as the President's guest (and supposedly why the bodyguard was sent home.)

When he was dying of throat cancer, after being ruined in a bank fraud, he hastily wrote his memoirs, to provide for his family after his death. They were surprisingly well-written and sold well.
