The electoral votes ended in a tie between Thomas Jefferson and his running mate Aaron Burr so the election had to be decided by the House of Representatives. Burr should have have conceded, but he saw his chance to be President and enemies of Jefferson saw a chance to cause trouble and maybe gain some concessions. After 36 ballots and a lot of political negotiation, Jefferson was elected president. The Constitution was soon amended to change the process for electing the President and preventing this kind of occurrence from happening again.
