War with the Soviet Union was a possibility at some time in the future and it was essential to keep the Soviets from having ready access to the Mediterranean Sea. To provide military and econimic aid to Turkey and Greece and to resist the spread of communism the Truman Doctrine was created.
yes they did as British soldiers needed help fighting of the communist Greek rebels, soon Britain informed they could not afford to keep their soldiers fighting in Greece so Truman stepped in and sent them money for weapons and equipment. Greece was under communist influence but had a British government because Stalin agreed with Churchill that Greece would remain on the Western sphere of influence. Now Truman also saw Turkey under the threat of Communism so they sent US aid to them as well.
