President Richard Nixon's foreign policy change, known as "detente," helped the US in the short term by improving relations with the Soviet Union and China. This led to several significant achievements, such as the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) agreement with the Soviet Union, which limited the development of nuclear weapons, and the opening of diplomatic relations with China. These developments helped ease tensions and reduce the risk of a nuclear conflict, promoting stability and increasing the US's global standing.
President Nixon and the Vietnamization policy emphasized that the US must gradually withdraw its troops from Vietnam and shift the burden of fighting to the South Vietnamese forces. The goal was to allow the South Vietnamese to take on a greater role in the war and enable the US to reduce its military involvement.
I believe it was Richard Nixon in 1973 who began pulling out troops out of VietNam but the final pullout of American troops was in March of 1975. So between 1973 and 1975 we still had soldiers and possibly missions going on in VietNam. I myself am a veteran who served from 1973 to 1976 although I never went into VietNam, I feel justified in being recognized as a VietNam era veteran. Am I wrong in thinking that way ?? This I ask to those who went into VietNam?!?!? Please give me your comments
