President John Adams is best known for his foreign, rather than his domestic policies. He signed the Alien and Sedition Acts into law, creating a great deal of animosity among the people. The laws were specifically aimed at immigrants, who had a tendency to vote for Democratic Republicans. He passed the Naturalization Act that increased citizenship requirements from five to fourteen years. His Federalist Congress enacted taxes that were so heavy that Pennsylvania farmers rioted and attacked tax collectors. Adam's domestic policies made it easy for his opponents to seize control of the White House.
