As a young man he was a lifeguard and worked in the school kitchen while in college. After college, he worked as a radio announcer mostly in sports broadcasts and eventually became the voice of teh Chicago Cubs, His way was paid to LA near where the Cubs had spring training and he took the opportunity to audition for a job in movies and amazingly was given a 7-year contract at WB to star in movies. He did well and his contract was renewed for another 7 seven years at a very good salary., but then he was called into the army . After the war ended , he was elected president of the screen actors' guild and friends pressed him to enter politics and he was elected twice a governor of California.
