I am not sure either candidate had a mascot. Perhaps you are thinking of the animals that represent the political parties: cartoonist Thomas Nast was the first to use the elephant to represent the Republicans, way back in 1874, and they have used it ever since; so if you saw any "mascots" that were elephants, they represented Mitt Romney's party, the Republicans. The Democrats have used the donkey as their symbol for almost as long, so if you saw any images of the donkey, it may have related to the Democratic candidate, Mr. Obama, and his party.
