The main issue was that there were not enough Model 1903 Springfield Rifles, and the government armories could not produce enough in time to arm the large numbers of troops in the vastly expanded American Army. Commercial firearm manufacturers had been contracted by the British government to produce Lee-Enfield rifles in British .303 caliber early in the war, and made nearly three million of these. The British production crisis had passed so this American manufacturing capacity was quickly switched over to produce "American Enfields", which were the British weapon in US .30-06 caliber. This was the weapon Acting Corporal Alvin C. York had in his hands when he earned his Medal of Honor in October 1918, despite Hollywood depictions. In the field the Springfield was a fine weapon and just as good as anybody's bolt action, stripper clip standard shoulder weapon. The action of the 1903 Springfield was a licensed version of the German Mauser Model 1898, and the performance of the two was similar. The sights of the Springfield might have been a bit complicated for inadequately trained draftees, who got little time on the range. The 1903 Springfield had sights which could be adjusted for windage, as well as elevation. Windage adjustments were absent from the rifles of other nations. But other than that it was simple, rugged, completely reliable and highly accurate.
