He was the first Republican President and the only President from the state of Illinois until President elect Barack Obama was inaugurated in January of 2009. President Abraham Lincoln is considered by many to have been the greatest President in the history of the United States of America. During the election of 1864, President Abraham Lincoln ran against Democratic candidate General George B. McClellan who was one of President Lincoln's worst generals. Thankfully for the United States of America, President Abraham Lincoln was reelected on November 8, 1864. During President Abraham Lincoln's second inauguration he gave what many historians believe to have been the greatest inaugural address. On April 11, 1865, the very popular actor John Wilkes Booth heard President Abraham Lincoln give a speech in which he mentioned that he was considering extending the right to vote to the newly freed slaves. On the night of April 14, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln and his wife attended the play, Our American Cousin at Ford's Theatre. Having been convinced by Lincoln's April 11th speech that assassination was the only way to prevent the freed slaves from getting the right to vote, John Wilkes Booth shot President Abraham Lincoln in the back of the head. The wounded President was taken to a boarding house across the street where he died early the next morning.
