Roosevelt was a sickly child prone to Asthma and a condition his family knew as "cholera morbus." He worked as a young man to overcome these weaknesses by brute force: he got physical exercise against the recommendation of the family doctor and eventually did overcome in large part his sickly tendencies. Much later in life, he contracted malaria and an infection in his leg during an expedition to explore the River of Doubt, a tributary of the Amazon. He nearly died from the illnesses.
