The oldest Naval shore installation is the Washington Navy Yard, located in Southeast Washington, D.C. It was the original Shipyard and Ordnance Center for the U.S. Navy. The land was purchased in July, 1799, and the Yard established in October of the same year.

Today it functions as a ceremonial and admin center for the Chief of Naval Operations, and as a headquarters for several Naval Commands - the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), the Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps, Military Sealift Command, and other smaller commands. Many Navy retirement ceremonies are held there as well, and the Navy's Historical Museum is a major Navy artifact repository. It is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
