November 11, 1918 was the date all hostilities of World War I ended. In November 1919 President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11, 1919 to be the first Armistice Day. The day was to honor all Americans who had served during the war.

In 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, the day was expanded to honor all Americans who had served during all wars the United States had been involved in and the name was officially changed to Veterans Day by legislation signed by President Dwight David Eisenhower. Eisenhower had been the European Theatre's Commanding General during WWII.
