Since 1987, Nancy Pelosi (born 1940) has been elected to the US House representing California's 8th Congressional District, which includes most of the city and county of San Franscisco. (From 1987 to 1993, this was part of the 5th District.)

In 2007, she was selected by House Democrats to be Speaker of the House for the 110th and 111th Congresses. She was the first woman to hold this position as the 60th Speaker of the US House of Representatives. As such, she became the highest-ranking female politician in American history.

For the 112th Congress, she was elected to the position of Minority Leader that she previously held from 2003 to 2007.
