In the US Navy, the ranks of "Seaman Recruit", "Seaman Apprentice" and "Seaman" are junior to the rank of Petty Officer 3rd Class. In increasing rank are Petty Officer 2nd Class, Petty Officer First Class and Chief Petty Officer.
