In the United States in order to impeach a Federal Official a complaint must be made to the appropriate Committee of the House of Representatives, who if they feel there is merit to the complaint will appoint a Special Prosecutor to carry out an investigation. If the Special Prosecutor decides there is enough evidence to merit prosecution the House Committee will then meet to draw up Articles of Impeachment, which must be approved by a vote of the whole House. If that happens the Articles are forwarded to the Senate, where there will be a trial of the indicted person in the Senate Chamber, members of the House of Representatives will act as the prosecution, and the indictee will be entitled to legal representation. At the end of the trial Senators will vote Guilty or Not Guilty, and a two-thirds vote is required to record a Guilty verdict.

The branch of government that can impeach federal officials is the legislative branch, specifically the United States Congress. The House of Representatives has the sole power of impeachment, which is the formal process of bringing charges against a federal official.
