The Secret Service was originally a part of the Department of the Treasury. Established in 1865, its primary mission was to combat the widespread counterfeiting of U.S. currency. It wasn't until 1901, following the assassination of President William McKinley, that the Secret Service was also tasked with protecting the president and other high-level officials.
