Session of the first Constituent Assembly of Pakistan was held on August 10, 1947. The first civilian session of the National Assembly after separation of East Pakistan, was held on 14th April 1972.
Pakistan had to face Martial Law (Military Takeover) numerous times. The first martial law took place in 1958 under Gen. Ayyub Khan. The second military take over happened in 1969 under General Agha Muhammad Yahya Khan. In 1971, Mr. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto imposed martial law as first civil chief martial law administrator. In 1977, Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Zia-ul-Haq imposed 4th Martial Law in 1977 and dismissed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto who was later executed following a controversial judgement. 5th and last military take over took place under command of General Pervez Musharraf who took over in 1999 throwing out Mr. Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif.

President Iskander Mirza and General Ayub Khan used martial law to retain power and establish military rule. This marked the first of several instances of military coups in Pakistan's history.
The second martial law was imposed on March 25, 1969, when President Ayub Khan abrogated his own constitution and handed over power to the Army Commander-in-Chief, General Agha Mohammad Yahya Khan.
