Martin Van Buren, who served as Secretary of State and vice-president under Jackson, succeeded Jackson. He served for only one term and lost his bid for a second term in 1840 to the Whig candidate, Wm. Henry Harrison. He ran as a third candidate in 1848 and won enough votes in NY to tip the election to Zachary Taylor. After that he retired and lived to an old age.
