Dan Quayle was the, somewhat surprising, choice for vice president. Quayle received criticism for his many gaffs as VP, reaching a peak when he "corrected" a student's spelling of "potato" to "potatoe". These criticisms put Bush Snr in a slight quandary when standing for a second term as dropping Quayle would have, on the face of it, seemed sensible but it would imply that Bush had made a mistake in picking him as running mate in the first place.
