Charles Evans Hughes, who was nominated by Roosevelt's predecessor, Herbert Hoover, lead the Court from 1930 until his retirement in 1941. Although considered a conservative, Hughes looked favorably on most of Roosevelt's New Deal legislation.
In 1941, President Roosevelt nominated Harlan Fiske Stone, who had served on the Court since his 1925 appointment under President Coolidge, to be elevated to Chief Justice. Stone served only five years before dying on the bench while reading his dissent to a case in 1946.
Chief Justice Warren Burger presided over the court from 1969 until 1986, when he was succeeded by Chief Justice William Rehnquist. Burger lead the Court during the 1977 to 1981 period.
